Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp explained that his team had to understand the need to make changes in the way they play, in order to beat Ajax 2-1 on Wednesday evening, in the first group of the Champions League.

Liverpool struggled to achieve its first victory in the competition, and waited until the 89th minute to score the decisive goal through Cameroon defender Joel Matip.

Liverpool raised its tally in the group to 3 points, after losing last week to its host Napoli 1-4.

Klopp told BT Sport: “I think everyone can see that we understood, that we had to make a completely different turn in the game. The guys did that. We played a lot of good things against a very fighting resistance. We scored the first goal and it was We have to score more goals, from free kicks in particular.”

He added, “I’m not sure that their goal came from their first chance, but Ajax didn’t have much. That’s how it is in our situation, anything can happen, but it was a great shot from (Mohamed) Kodous.”

He continued: “It’s like another test. Everyone hopes that things will go in the right direction and then there will be another setback. You can see the effect of that. The pressure before the goal was much better than the pressure after the goal, but if we are going to press, we have to do it right.”.

And about Ajax revealing Liverpool’s defense very easily, Klopp said: “I have to watch the game again. I thought we coped well with that, in this case no, but that will always happen in football.”

And he added: “If I (Alison Becker) had to make a save, something went wrong earlier. I understand we’re talking about small details but it’s not that important to us because it’s about being attacked, which can always happen, and then we have to go back to what’s going on. We should have done.”
