Bayern Munich suffers their first Bundesliga defeat

Date:

Bayern Munich experienced their first defeat of the season in the Bundesliga, losing 1-2 to Mainz on Saturday at the Miwa Arena during the 14th round of matches.

South Korean Lee Jae-Sung netted both of Mainz’s goals, scoring in the 41st and 60th minutes, while Leroy Sane found the net for Bayern Munich in the 86th minute.

Bayern Munich’s points remained at 33, keeping them at the top of the table, while Mainz increased their total to 22 points, moving up to sixth place.

Bayern Munich’s first chance came in the sixth minute when Muller sent a pass to Oliseh inside the penalty area, and the latter fired a strong low shot that struck the post. In the 12th minute, Sane delivered a cross from the left, which Oliseh headed over the bar.

Mainz responded in the 14th minute when striker Burkhardt broke free and advanced into the penalty area, but his low shot went just wide of the post. He was forced to leave the field shortly after due to a muscle injury.

Mainz squandered a chance to take the lead in the 29th minute when the ball fell to Kasi inside the box, but his powerful shot was aimed straight at Bayern’s goalkeeper Pertz, who comfortably saved it.

Mainz took the lead in the 41st minute when substitute Sepp fired a shot from the left side of the box. The ball deflected off Oliseh and fell to Lee Jae-sung, who was one-on-one with goalkeeper Pertz and calmly slotted it into the net, giving Mainz a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

In the 60th minute, Mainz extended their lead with a brilliant piece of play. Kasi sent a backheel pass to Sepp on the right side, who crossed low into the box. Lee was in the perfect position to meet the ball, and his shot deflected off Kimmich, wrong-footing Pertz before finding the back of the net.

Bayern looked to pull one back in the 64th minute when Muller delivered a cross from the right. Sane met it with a volley, but his effort sailed over the bar.

Amiri nearly sealed the game for Mainz in the 65th minute, firing a low shot from inside the box that was saved by Bayern’s goalkeeper Pertz.

Mainz continued to push forward, taking advantage of Bayern’s attacking efforts to narrow the gap. In the 69th minute, Sepp fired a shot from inside the box, but it went wide of the target.

Bayern had another chance in the 74th minute when Jamal Musiala rose to meet a cross from Laimer, but his header sailed over the crossbar. Mainz responded in the 76th minute with a long-range shot from Sanu, which narrowly missed the post.

Bayern finally pulled one back in the 86th minute when Kimmich’s shot from outside the box deflected off a Mainz defender, falling to Sane in front of an open goal. Sane calmly slotted the ball into the net, but it was too little, too late as the match ended with Mainz securing a 2-1 victory.
