Luca de la Torre officially Joins San Diego FC on Loan
San Diego FC has added U.S. men’s national team midfielder Luca de la Torre on loan from Celta Vigo. The move includes a future purchase option. This addition strengthens the club’s roster ahead of its first MLS season.
Luca de la Torre, 26, is a key acquisition for the expansion team. He has experience with Celta Vigo, where he made 67 appearances since joining from Heracles. Although injury setbacks limited his appearances this season, de la Torre is an established figure in the USMNT, earning 24 caps and playing in the 2022 World Cup.
A Full-Circle Moment for De la Torre
Originally from San Diego, de la Torre is returning home to play for the team where he began his youth career with San Diego Surf. This move marks a full-circle moment in his professional journey, from Europe to MLS, and back to his hometown.
San Diego FC Builds for Its MLS Debut
De la Torre’s signing is part of San Diego FC’s efforts to build a competitive team. He joins notable players like Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano, Andres Reyes, Anibal Godoy, and Emmanuel Boateng. The club will begin its MLS journey on February 23 against LA Galaxy, with their first home match on March 1 against St. Louis City SC.
“We’re excited to welcome Luca back to San Diego,” said Sporting Director Tyler Heaps. “His skill and commitment will be crucial as we build our team for the upcoming season.”
