Amad earns Man Utd an important point after a thrilling second-half

Date:

Manchester United secured a 2-2 draw against hosts Liverpool on Sunday evening in the 20th round of the Premier League.

Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, who converted a penalty, scored for Liverpool in the 59th and 70th minutes, respectively.

For Manchester United, Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo found the net in the 52nd and 80th minutes, securing the draw.

Liverpool remained at the top of the table with 46 points, while Manchester United moved up to 13th place with 23 points.

United initially sought to absorb Liverpool’s early pressure by passing the ball around and attempting to take control, aiming to prevent the Reds from launching attacks that could threaten Andre Onana’s goal.

However, Liverpool took the initiative in the 12th minute, with Luis Diaz attempting a shot, but it sailed wide of the target.

Gakpo nearly gave Liverpool the lead after receiving a through ball inside the penalty area. He attempted to place the ball with a direct touch into the far right corner, but it narrowly missed the post.

Onana stood firm as an impenetrable barrier against Mac Allister, who had received a delicate pass from Salah near the goal. Mac Allister tried to meet the ball with a low shot, but the Cameroonian goalkeeper brilliantly saved it, turning it into a corner.

United’s first real threat came after 20 minutes when Dalot sent in a perfect cross. Diallo, unmarked, failed to convert it into a goal, as the ball brushed off his head and was inexplicably deflected wide.

Gravenberch then tested his luck with a long-range rocket shot, but it sailed wide of the left post.

Alisson kept United from taking the lead when a precise through pass found Hojlund, who was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The Danish striker fired a shot, but Alisson made a crucial save, blocking it with his body.

Salah then made a run from the right, entering the visitors’ penalty area, but his shot went wide of the goal. The following minutes passed without any further danger, and the first half ended in a 0-0 draw.

Shortly after the start of the second half, United stunned their hosts by taking the lead through Martinez. He received the ball inside the penalty area and blasted it powerfully into the roof of the net.

Buoyed by the goal, Manchester United pushed forward, looking to extend their lead, but goalkeeper Alisson Becker denied them with two crucial saves on consecutive chances.

Liverpool quickly responded with an equalizer, as Gakpo skilfully dribbled past De Ligt inside the penalty area before firing the ball powerfully into the left side of Onana’s net.

A few minutes later, Liverpool were awarded a penalty kick after a handball by De Ligt, confirmed by VAR. Salah stepped up and successfully converted the penalty, putting the home team ahead with their second goal.

Salah later had a chance to increase Liverpool’s lead with a powerful free kick, but his shot sailed over the bar, wasting the opportunity.

United sparked life into the match 10 minutes before the end of regular time through Diallo, who connected with Garnacho’s pass and fired it into the net to level the score.

Fernandes then tried to catch Alisson off guard with a powerful shot from the left side. Alisson attempted to catch it, but the ball slipped through his hands and went out for a corner.

Liverpool launched a quick counterattack, but it was thwarted by a brilliant tackle from Euro. The Reds quickly revived the attack, with Bradley finishing it off with a shot from the right. Onana made a brilliant save, turning it into a corner. The resulting cross nearly saw Van Dijk head it into the net, but Onana was alert and made the stop.

In the final minutes, Liverpool intensified their pressure, hoping for a winner, but United’s defence stood firm, denying them.

In the dying moments, Maguire squandered a golden opportunity to score a decisive goal for United. He failed to convert a pass from Zirkzee inside the penalty area, misfiring with a wayward shot that went high over the goal.
