Aston Villa have initiated discussions with Borussia Dortmund regarding a possible £25 million ($31m) move for Dutch forward Donyell Malen.
Aston Villa are eager to sign a versatile forward this month and have identified Donyell Malen as their top target, according to The Telegraph. The Dutch forward has netted five goals for Dortmund this season but has started just three of their last 10 matches, which could lead to more playing time at Villa Park. Discussions have taken place regarding a £25 million move, though the Midlands club is reportedly considering other options if the deal becomes financially unfeasible.
Aston Villa have leaned on Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran for goals this season following the summer sale of Moussa Diaby and a dip in form from Leon Bailey. With Unai Emery aiming to balance the pursuit of European qualification alongside ongoing Champions League and FA Cup campaigns, targeting a versatile forward who can play across the frontline and relieve pressure on Watkins and Duran seems like a sensible move.
Malen has already experienced English football, having been part of Arsenal’s academy from 2015 to 2017. The 25-year-old made a strong impression in the Gunners’ youth teams, excelling in both domestic and European competitions. His performances earned him a spot on the first team’s pre-season tour of Australia and China in 2017. However, that would be his final appearance for Arsenal, as he sealed a move to PSV in August 2017.
