Barcelona is on the verge of securing a deal for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah for the upcoming season.
Jonathan Tah’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen is set to expire next summer, allowing him to join any club for free starting in January.
As reported by the Spanish newspaper Sport, discussions between Tah and Barcelona are at an advanced stage, with the Catalan club feeling confident about securing his signature for next season.
Barcelona has taken the lead over Bayern Munich in the race for Jonathan Tah, following a productive meeting between Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, the player, and his agent, Pini Zahavi.
The 28-year-old German defender has shown strong interest in Barcelona’s vision, expressing admiration for the project Deco presented to him.
Signing Tah will not jeopardize Ronald Araujo’s position at the club, as Deco aims to strengthen the defensive lineup by bringing in top talent. Barcelona’s sporting management regards Araujo as one of the best defenders in the world and remains committed to renewing his contract, despite stalled negotiations.
However, Tah’s arrival would create competition in the centre-back position. As a result, Barcelona plans to part ways with at least one defender in the summer, with Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia being the most likely candidates for departure. Both players have contracts running until 2026, and their exits could provide Barcelona with a financial opportunity, especially since they joined the club on free transfers.
