The Canadian national ice hockey team defeated the Czech Republic in the final of the youth world championship and became the winner of the tournament for the 20th time in its history.
The meeting, which took place in Canadian Halifax , ended with the victory of the hosts of the tournament in overtime with a score of 3:2 (1:0, 1:0, 0:2, 1:0) in favor of the hosts of the championship. Dylan Gunther (13th minute) and Shane Wright (25th) scored goals in regular time as part of the winners. Dylan Gunther (67) brought the victory to Canada in overtime. The Czechs scored Jiri Kulikh (53) and Jakub Kos (54).
Team Canada won its 20th World Youth Championship title and won gold for the second time in a row, defending the title.
The best sniper at the end of the tournament was the Canadian Connor Bedard, who scored nine goals in seven matches. Also, Bedard with 14 assists became the best assistant of the MFM-2023 and the top scorer (23).
The Canadian was recognized as the most valuable player and the best forward of the tournament. The symbolic team of the championship included him, Czech David Irzhichek, recognized as the best defender, his compatriots Tomas Suhanek and Jiri Kulih, Swede Ludwig Jansson, and American Logan Cooley. Adam Gayan was recognized as the best goalkeeper of the MFM-2023.
Initially, Novosibirsk and Omsk were supposed to host the competition, however, due to the situation in Ukraine, the board of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) deprived Russia of the right to host the youth world championship. In addition, the national teams of Russia and Belarus do not play in the tournament due to suspension.
