Former Liverpool player Jimmy Carragher has questioned the feasibility of Manchester United’s decision to pay 70 million pounds for Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro.
Casemiro, 30, was introduced at Old Trafford, before the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory over rivals Liverpool in the third round of the Premier League, and is seen as the solution to coach Eric Ten Hag’s midfield problems.
“United continues their policy of going after established stars for big money and huge salaries, even if they don’t have a set selling fee,” Carragher wrote in an article for the Telegraph.
“Casemiro may succeed where others at Old Trafford failed. His recruitment is still short-sighted and the opposite of how (Mikel) Arteta decided to use his resources, although he also spent large sums.
There is a new air of optimism surrounding Arsenal after the North London team made smart signings with Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Fabio Vieira while remaining unbeaten in the pre-season.
Arteta’s team started the season in the same vein, as it is currently at the top of the English Premier League table after winning its first three matches.
“Arteta gradually excluded the elderly and those with high incomes from his team: Mesut Ozil, David Luiz, Aubameyang, and Alexandre Lacazette.”
“Getting rid of reputable players with high wages could not have been achieved overnight,” he stressed.
And he added, “It will also not be without criticism because the superstars always have an army of supporters who present them as being disrespected.”
