Ipswich Town stunned Chelsea with a 2-0 victory on Monday evening in the 19th round of the English Premier League.
The match saw goals from Liam Delap (12th minute, penalty) and Omari Hutchinson (53rd minute) for Ipswich.
As a result of this defeat, Chelsea’s tally remained at 35 points, keeping them in fourth place, while Ipswich’s points increased to 15, moving them up to 18th place.
This marks Chelsea’s third consecutive match without a win, following a goalless draw against Everton and a 2-1 loss to Fulham.
Ipswich looked determined to cause an upset from the start, with Chelsea’s defence clearing Broadhead’s shot off the line in the 4th minute.
The referee, assisted by video technology, awarded Ipswich a penalty after Chelsea goalkeeper Philip Jorgensen fouled striker Liam Delap. Delap stepped up to convert the penalty in the 12th minute.
Delap nearly scored again in the 14th minute when Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella cleared the ball to Hutchinson, who then passed to Delap for a shot that was brilliantly saved by Jorgensen.
From a free-kick, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer took a shot that struck the post and fell to his teammate Christopher Nkunku, who tried to follow up, but Ipswich goalkeeper Walton was there to deny him in the 21st minute.
Chelsea thought they had scored in the 26th minute when Joao Felix found the back of the net, but the referee disallowed the goal after VAR ruled Felix offside.
Another opportunity went begging for Chelsea in the 29th minute when winger Noni Madueke made a run down the right wing. The ball eventually found Felix, whose attempt was blocked by the defence. It then rebounded to Cucurella, whose shot went wide of the far post.
Ipswich’s defence cleared a high ball aimed at Madueke, which landed at the feet of Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo on the edge of the penalty area. Caicedo fired a shot high over the goal in the 35th minute.
A minute later, Chelsea defender Levi Colwell sent a long pass to Palmer, who laid it off for Felix. However, Felix’s shot was weak and easily gathered by the keeper.
Jorgensen made a brilliant save in the 38th minute after Hutchinson’s individual effort led to a pass to Delap at the far post. Delap opted for a shot at the near post, but the Chelsea keeper blocked the attempt.
In stoppage time of the first half, Felix passed the ball to Palmer, who took a daring shot. However, Ipswich goalkeeper Walton managed to palm it away before the ball hit the crossbar.
Felix had another opportunity in the 47th minute when Enzo Fernandez delivered a cross from a tight angle. Felix’s header was cleared off the line by Ipswich defender Burns.
In the 49th minute, Chelsea defender Axel Disasi sent a pass down the right to Madueke, who escaped his marker and fired a shot, but Walton made the save.
Ipswich extended their lead in the 53rd minute when Hutchinson intercepted a poor pass from Disasi and fired a low shot past Jorgensen into the net, making it 2-0.
Chelsea made substitutions, with Nicolas Jackson replacing Felix and Jadon Sancho coming on for Nkunku. In the 73rd minute, Delap wasted a chance for Ipswich when he cut the ball back from the Chelsea defence but saw his shot saved by Jorgensen.
Fernandez then made a clever pass to Jackson in the 78th minute, but the striker’s shot went wide of the right post. The linesman also flagged Jackson offside.
The final minutes saw little action, and the match ended with Ipswich securing their third win of the Premier League season.
