Gary Neville: Amorim doesn’t trust his players

Date:

Gary Neville has stated that Ruben Amorim no longer has faith in his Manchester United players following the team’s two consecutive defeats in the Premier League. Neville pointed out that Amorim’s lack of trust in his squad is becoming increasingly clear after the recent losses.

Manchester United suffered a 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, marking Ruben Amorim’s second consecutive Premier League defeat after also losing to Arsenal earlier in the week. The Portuguese coach, who has now overseen five matches in charge, has made several changes to his starting lineup for each game, a decision that has frustrated Gary Neville.

Currently sitting in 13th place in the Premier League, Manchester United has faced criticism from Gary Neville, who has urged Ruben Amorim to take inspiration from Enzo Maresca. Since Maresca’s appointment at Chelsea, he has led the team to second place. Neville also criticized Amorim’s inconsistent team selections, suggesting that they indicate a lack of trust in his squad.

Neville shared his thoughts with NBC Sports, saying, “When you constantly rotate players and keep changing your back three, taking five players off during a match, you’re essentially telling them that you don’t trust them. They’ve clearly been substituted early, which sends that message.”

He added, “A few weeks ago, Ten Hag did something similar, frequently changing the backline and midfield. By the time the match ended, the system and lineup were entirely different. That makes it impossible to achieve consistency.”

Neville added, “It looked disorganized, a real mess. United had no clear structure at the end. They weren’t outstanding in the first half, but at least they had some structure.”

He emphasized, “Pick your best starting XI and give them the trust to perform. Maresca is doing that at Chelsea now—he sticks with the same XI on weekends and then changes it in midweek. He’s sending a message to the players that there’s stability and clarity. Constantly changing the lineup just feels like you’re juggling too many things at once with no consistency. You need to establish patterns and a cohesive approach.”

On Thursday, Manchester United will face Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, followed by a crucial Premier League derby against Manchester City next weekend.
