Kylian Mbappé, the captain of the French national team and the star of Real Madrid, addressed several complex topics related to his career.
Kylian Mbappé, in an interview with Canal Plus, reflected on the ongoing scrutiny he faces as a prominent figure in football. “While I remain silent, there are those who feel the need to bring my name into every conversation,” he remarked.
He also addressed his stance against certain sponsorships associated with the French national team. Mbappé explained his refusal to promote fast food and betting brands, emphasizing the harm betting can inflict on individuals. “At the time, I stood my ground, even though it was misinterpreted as a selfish pursuit of money. In reality, I didn’t gain a single euro from this. Over time, it became clear that my decision aligned with a collective stance taken by the team.”
Kylian Mbappé delved into several personal and professional topics during a candid interview with Canal Plus, shedding light on his decisions, challenges, and criticisms throughout his career.
The French star recounted a pivotal moment when he stood firm against the French Football Federation over promotional activities. “I told the president not to waste his energy, as I wouldn’t participate in such promotions. Coach Deschamps supported my stance, and eventually, the contracts were adjusted. Everyone, including the federation officials, was satisfied,” he explained.
Reflecting on past criticism, Mbappé spoke about the backlash he endured after Euro 2021, where he was subjected to racial slurs and blamed for France’s early exit. “They called me ‘the monkey’ and placed the responsibility for the loss on my shoulders. I played through a broken nose in the last tournament and refused to back down. Despite accusations that I don’t care about the national team, my focus on Real Madrid doesn’t diminish my commitment to France. I always prioritize the national team and never give up on it.”
Mbappé also criticized the intense match schedules in football. “Players need proper rest, just like stars in the American leagues who enjoy a four-month break. Footballers barely get two weeks before the grind starts again. Then, everything about our performance is analyzed, even down to the smallest detail. Fans can be incredibly fickle. I’m not saying we don’t want to play, but we need adequate rest. When I look at athletes’ earnings in other sports, it’s clear they often surpass even the biggest names in football.”
Addressing a recent accusation of harassment in Stockholm, Mbappé dismissed the claims as unfounded. “I was initially shocked, but I haven’t received any summons, and the Swedish authorities haven’t announced anything. This situation doesn’t affect my focus. If I’m called to testify, I’ll cooperate fully, but for now, I’m staying focused on my work.”
Mbappé also shared a piece of advice he received from Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “I had planned to vacation elsewhere, but Ancelotti suggested a quieter destination. It was the right choice—I felt at ease, as evidenced by the warm reception I received from both attendees and journalists when I left a restaurant.”
The French captain concluded by reflecting on his public image and how he handles criticism. “Some say I’m very mature, but others expect us to be robotic. I don’t let criticism get to me and avoid watching French television. My friends keep me updated on what’s happening. At the end of the day, we’re all human and subject to both praise and criticism.”
