Bayer Leverkusen extend their winning streak by defeating Mainz 1-0 on Tuesday evening in the 17th round of the Bundesliga at the BayArena stadium. The match was decided by a second-half goal from Alejandro Grimaldo, helping Leverkusen stay in pursuit of Bayern Munich at the top of the table.
Grimaldo’s Goal Seals the Win for Leverkusen
Leverkusen struggled to break Mainz’s defence in the first half, despite multiple chances. The breakthrough came in the 49th minute when Grimaldo fired a free-kick into the net, giving the hosts a deserved lead.

Leverkusen had several chances before Grimaldo’s goal. In the 7th minute, Schick was one-on-one with Mainz’s goalkeeper Zentner, but his low shot was cleared off the line by Olsen. Leverkusen’s Hincapie also had a powerful shot in the 23rd minute that narrowly missed, while Grimaldo himself saved his team in the 30th minute after a powerful volley from Schick hit him.
Mainz’s Attempted Comeback Falls Short
After conceding the goal, Mainz immediately looked for an equalizer. Lee’s shot in the 51st minute was saved by Kovar, and Kasi’s attempt from an empty goal went wide. Despite continued pressure, Mainz couldn’t find the back of the net. They had another opportunity in the 58th minute, but Kovar was again equal to the task.
Leverkusen’s Defense Holds Strong
Leverkusen remained solid defensively, with Kovar pulling off several crucial saves. Frimpong nearly sealed the win with a low shot in the 73rd minute, but Zentner kept Mainz in the game.
