Liverpool come back with a late winner thanks to Salah

Liverpool staged a dramatic comeback to secure a 3-2 victory against Southampton on Sunday evening during the 12th round of the English Premier League. The Reds overturned a 2-1 deficit, showcasing resilience and determination to claim the hard-fought win at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah delivered a match-winning performance, netting the team’s second and third goals in the 65th minute and an 83rd-minute penalty. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 30th minute, while Southampton’s goals came from Adam Armstrong, who converted a penalty in the 42nd minute, and Matheus Fernandes in the 56th minute.

The victory saw Liverpool extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table, reaching 31 points—8 points clear of second-placed Manchester City. Meanwhile, Southampton remains anchored at the bottom of the standings with just 4 points.

The match between Liverpool and Southampton was filled with excitement and drama, as both teams displayed attacking intent from the outset.

Southampton nearly took an early lead in the fifth minute when Matheus Fernandes surged through midfield and unleashed a shot, but Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made a vital save. Liverpool quickly responded a minute later, with Mohamed Salah firing a shot after receiving a pass from Dominik Szoboszlai, but Alex McCarthy saved comfortably.

Szoboszlai tried his luck in the 15th minute with a long-range effort that sailed into the stands, while Cody Gakpo created a chance from the left in the 21st minute, delivering a cross that Salah met from a tight angle, only for McCarthy to deny him. Gakpo himself tested McCarthy with a shot in the 27th minute, but the Southampton goalkeeper stood firm.

Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 30th minute after a defensive mix-up from Southampton. The ball fell to Szoboszlai on the edge of the area, and his strike ricocheted off the post and into the net.

Kelleher preserved Liverpool’s lead in the 33rd minute, denying Flynn Downs’ close-range effort with a sharp save. However, Southampton equalized in the 42nd minute after a penalty was awarded via VAR review for a foul by Andy Robertson. Adam Armstrong’s spot-kick was initially saved by Kelleher but rebounded kindly for him to convert.

The second half began with both teams trading possession and attempts. Southampton capitalized on a swift counterattack in the 56th minute, with Fernandes finishing low past Kelleher after receiving a pass from Deppling.

Liverpool made changes, introducing Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz, which added urgency to their play. In the 62nd minute, Salah set up Diaz with a golden opportunity, but the Colombian missed from close range.

Salah equalized for Liverpool in the 65th minute, exploiting Southampton’s high line with a clever run and a deft finish following Ryan Gravenberch’s precise pass.

Liverpool came close to taking the lead moments later when Diaz’s header from a corner was acrobatically saved by McCarthy.

The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute when Liverpool were awarded a penalty for a handball by Japanese defender Sugawara. Salah confidently converted, securing the Reds’ victory.

Salah almost completed his hat-trick in the 88th minute, but his close-range effort struck the woodwork, leaving the final score at 3-2 in Liverpool’s favor.
