Manchester City Held to a 2-2 Draw by Brighton After Defensive Errors
Manchester City had to settle for a frustrating 2-2 draw against Brighton on Saturday after making critical mistakes at the back. Despite Erling Haaland’s historic performance and Omar Marmoush’s powerful strike, City couldn’t keep their lead, and Brighton capitalized on defensive errors.
Erling Haaland Makes Premier League History
Haaland continued to make history, becoming the fastest player to reach 100 Premier League goal contributions (84 goals and 16 assists). The Norwegian opened the scoring with a cool penalty after Marmoush was fouled in the box. However, City’s lead didn’t last long as Brighton quickly equalized.
Defensive Mistakes Cost City Dearly
Stefan Ortega, City’s goalkeeper, made an embarrassing mistake when he failed to attempt to stop Pervis Estupinan’s free-kick. The ball hit the post and bounced into the net, drawing Brighton level. City’s defense was shaky throughout the game, and their inability to clear danger from set pieces cost them dearly.
Marmoush Gives City the Lead Again, But Brighton Responds
After Estupinan’s equalizer, City regained the lead with a quick counter-attack. Ilkay Gundogan intercepted a pass and set up Marmoush, who struck it fiercely into the net. However, Brighton wasn’t done yet. Early in the second half, City failed to clear a corner, and an own goal from Abdukodir Khusanov leveled the score again.
Missed Opportunities for Both Sides
Both teams had opportunities to secure all three points. Nico Gonzalez hit the post for City, while Brighton had their chances, too. Joao Pedro wasted a big chance before the break, and later, Carlos Baleba missed an even bigger opportunity, firing over the bar from a prime position in the box.
A Draw That Leaves City Vulnerable
The draw left Manchester City in fifth place in the Premier League table, unable to climb above Chelsea. With Newcastle having a game in hand, City now faces the threat of falling further down the standings.
