Manchester United lose 4-3 to Brentford in wild EPL clash
Manchester United lose 4-3 to Brentford in a high-scoring Premier League encounter on Sunday night, with costly defensive errors and set-piece chaos proving decisive at the Gtech Community Stadium. Despite scoring twice late through Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo, the Red Devils fell short against a determined Brentford side.
Mount Scores Early but Brentford Hit Back
The match began with intense pressure from Brentford, who capitalized on United’s defensive instability. Although Mason Mount opened the scoring for United in the 14th minute after a slick counterattack led by Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho, the lead didn’t last long.
Luke Shaw unfortunately deflected a shot into his own net in the 27th minute, leveling the score. Brentford then struck again six minutes later when Kevin Schade headed in from close range, giving the hosts a deserved 2-1 lead.
Defensive Woes Deepen for United
United’s problems worsened when Matthijs de Ligt suffered an injury just before Brentford’s second goal. The defender was eventually replaced by Harry Maguire, adding further instability to an already shaky back-line.
Brentford nearly extended their lead before halftime, but goalkeeper Altay Bayindir produced key saves to deny both Schade and Christian Nørgaard. At the other end, Garnacho squandered a clear chance after being set up by Mount in stoppage time.
Brentford Strike Twice More in the Second Half
Manchester United showed some promise early in the second half with efforts from Mount and Garnacho, but Brentford remained dangerous from set-pieces and long throw-ins.
In the 70th minute, Schade scored his second of the night, again with a header from a Bryan Mbeumo cross. Just four minutes later, Yoane Wissa added a fourth goal for Brentford, finishing a well-timed assist from Yehor Yarmoliuk to make it 4-1.
Late Fightback Falls Short
United responded with spirit. Garnacho unleashed a brilliant curling strike in the 82nd minute to reduce the deficit to 4-2. Then in stoppage time, Amad Diallo’s left-footed effort took a heavy deflection off Van den Berg, sneaking past goalkeeper Mark Flekken for a third goal.
Despite the dramatic comeback, the final whistle confirmed that Manchester United lose 4-3 to Brentford, leaving Amorim’s side stuck in 15th place with 39 points. Brentford, meanwhile, climbed to 10th with 52 points.
