The NFL has officially launched one of the least surprising promotions.
The Chiefs announced on Friday that Matt Nagy has been promoted to offensive coordinator. This comes as a result of Eric Bieniemy’s departure for Washington, where the former Chiefs offensive coordinator assumed the same position with play-calling duties for the Commanders.
The news on Friday is just the most recent example of how Nagy and Bieniemy’s careers have been linked. In 2016 and 2017, Nagy was Kansas City’s offensive coordinator. His efforts helped the NFL’s 20th-ranked offense in 2016 become a top-five unit in 2017, which led the Bears to hire him as head coach in 2018. Bieniemy took over as Chiefs OC after Nagy left.
Naturally, Nagy’s time in Chicago didn’t work out because the Bears couldn’t find a long-term center. Nagy’s Bears failed so badly to make the playoffs twice in four seasons that Chicago fired him after the 2021 season.
In 2022, Nagy joined Reid’s staff again, this time as a senior and an assistant quarterbacks coach. When Bieniemy left a week ago, the obvious choice for his replacement was: Nagy.
He is now in charge of an offense that is already among the best in the NFL. The Chiefs shouldn’t let him down because he knows Reid and Patrick Mahomes.
