Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said his team was “lucky” not to receive goals from Robert Lewandowski when the Polish star returned to the Allianz Arena.
Lewandowski continued his dazzling performances and scoring brilliance after his move from Bayern to Barcelona, and scored a hat-trick in his first Champions League match in the Barca shirt, against Viktoria Plzen.
But he did not manage to score during the match that ended with Bayern Munich’s 2-0 victory over Barcelona on Tuesday evening at the Allianz Arena in Munich in the second round of the group stage matches.
Neuer saved a dangerous header from his former teammate Lewandowski, after the latter missed another opportunity after hitting the ball over the crossbar.
The two chances could have resulted in Lewandowski scoring in yesterday’s match, and Neuer admitted that luck was with Bayern during the confrontation.
“I think it was an emotional match for Lewandowski because he achieved great success in Munich, but we also know him as a competitor, and luck was not on his side in the decisive moments,” Neuer said in his statements to reporters after the match.
He added, “We were lucky that he hit the ball over the crossbar and that I saved the second attempt. We showed a good performance on the defensive side.”
Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann also believes that Lewandowski performed well, although he failed to score, and admitted that most of the talk before the match was about Lewandowski, the Barcelona player, facing the former team.
Nagelsmann said: “I think he played a good game, and I’m glad he didn’t score. We saw that he was a threat, and we managed to tackle him very well.”
He added, “I saw him after the match and hugged him, but he is playing for another team now, and I have many players that I had to go to.”
And the Bayern coach continued: “This week, I may have received 60 questions about Lewandowski, you can direct these questions to Xavi because he (Lewandowski) is no longer my player.”
For his part, Barcelona coach Xavi said that he did not believe that Lewandowski was affected by the nature of the confrontation, and explained: “I do not think that he may suffer from pressure, given his maturity and experience.”
Xavi added: “It’s just a lack of effectiveness (in the attacks). This is football and this happens in it.”
