Newcastle attempted to sign Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.
The Magpies have discussed with Manchester United the possibility of arranging a move for the Scottish international in January, according to The Athletic.
United do not want to sell McTominay in the winter, and head coach Eric ten Hag considers him a valuable player.
Newcastle are going to return to this option in the summer. It is alleged that Manchester United does not want to sell players at all in this transfer window, as there will be little time left to sign new players to replace the departed players.
Manchester United are in fourth place with 39 points. Newcastle are third in the Premier League standings. The team scored 39 points after 20 matches.
