Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, the standout performer for Italian club Atalanta, has been crowned the Best African Player of 2024.
Lookman triumphed over notable contenders, including Brighton’s Ivorian winger Simon Adingra, Borussia Dortmund’s Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy, Paris Saint-Germain’s Moroccan full-back Achraf Hakimi, and Mamelodi Sundowns’ South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
The Nigerian forward received the prestigious accolade during the African Awards ceremony held on Monday evening in Marrakech, Morocco, attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
Lookman played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph last season, netting a stunning hat-trick in the final, which saw the Italian side secure a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
In the women’s category, Zambian star Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride claimed the award for Best African Player.
During her acceptance speech, Banda expressed gratitude to everyone who supported her throughout her journey, offering special thanks to her coaches while also commending the impressive talents of her fellow nominees.
