On Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-7 to advance to Super Bowl LVII.
In the rout of the 49ers, the Eagles scored on their first possession and never looked back.
After rookie starting quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an injury to his right elbow in the first quarter as a result of a hit by Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick that resulted in a fumble being thrown, the 49ers were temporarily without him. Josh Johnson, San Francisco’s fourth-string quarterback, substituted for Purdy until the third quarter before suffering a concussion and being ruled out of the game.
Purdy returned to the game on an injured elbow, but the 49ers’ offense struggled to score any points.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia run game and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts dominated the 49ers’ defense and rushed for 148 yards and all four touchdowns. According to NFL Research, Hurts (15) passed Cameron Newton (14) for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season, including playoffs, in NFL history with his rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Later on Sunday, the winner of the AFC Championship between the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs will face the Eagles, who are making their first appearance in the Super Bowl since winning it in 2017-18.
On February 12, State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, will host Super Bowl LVII.
