Today, January 23, ended the match of the 18th round of the Spanish La Liga, in which Athletic played against Real Madrid. The meeting was held at the San Mames stadium in Bilbao.
In the first half, the Madrid club slightly surpassed Athletic in possession of the ball (60% vs. 40%). The teams delivered an equal number of shots at each other’s goal (5), but it was the “Merengues” who managed to open the score. It happened in the 24th minute, when striker Karim Benzema, after heading Marco Asensio, sent the ball into the far corner of the goal with an accurate blow.
In the second half, Athletic already had the ball more often, and many times surpassed the opponent in shots – 13 against 5. But this did not help Ernesto Valverde’s team to save the meeting. Moreover, Real Madrid scored another goal. In the 90th minute, Toni Kroos, with the transfer of Rodrigo, set the final score in this match – 2: 0 in favor of Madrid.
