The Netherlands national football team beat the Qataris and advanced to the playoffs of the 2022 World Cup

The Netherlands national football team defeated the team of Qatar in the final match of the group stage of the 2022 World Cup and advanced to the 1/8 finals of the tournament.

The Group A meeting, held at the El Bayt Stadium in El Howrah, ended with a score of 2:0. 

Goals were scored by Cody Gakpo (26th minute) and Frenkie de Jong (49th). In the 68th minute, Steven Berghuis sent the ball into the Qatari’s goal, but the referee Bakary Gassama canceled the goal after applying the VAR system due to Gakpo’s handball.

Gakpo scored three goals in three matches of the 2022 World Cup: earlier he scored in meetings with the teams of Ecuador (1:1) and Senegal (2:0).

The Dutch went through to the playoffs from the first place in the group (7 points), and the Qataris (0) finished their performance in the tournament. The Senegal team (6), which also made it to the playoffs, was second, while the Ecuador team (4) was third.

In the first round of the playoffs, Louis van Gaal’s team will face the second-place team in Group B. England, the USA, Wales, and Iran are in this quartet.
