A new era is set to begin at the Santiago Bernabéu, as Xabi Alonso joins Real Madrid as head coach for the next three seasons. The Spanish giants confirmed the legendary midfielder’s appointment, with his tenure beginning on June 1, 2025, and running until June 30, 2028.
A Glorious Playing Legacy
According to Real Madrid’s official announcement, Alonso is “one of the greatest legends of Real Madrid and world football.” During his time as a player at the club (2009–2014), he made 236 appearances and secured six major titles, including the long-awaited “La Décima” UEFA Champions League title in 2014.
The 42-year-old is also a national icon, having won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012 with Spain, amassing 113 international caps.
A Rising Star in Coaching
Xabi Alonso joins Real Madrid after a stellar coaching spell at Bayer Leverkusen. Where he led the German side to a historic treble: the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and German Super Cup. His coaching roots, however, trace back to Madrid, having started at the club’s academy and guiding the youth team to league and UEFA Youth League success in 2018–19.

The club also announced that Alonso will be officially presented as the new manager on Monday, May 26, at 12:30 p.m. (local time) at Real Madrid City. Before the event, club president Florentino Pérez will oversee the formal signing of Alonso’s contract.
