Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti discussed the team’s preparations ahead of their upcoming match against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, in the 19th round of La Liga.
In his pre-match press conference, Ancelotti emphasized the challenge ahead, stating, “It will be a tough and thrilling game, played in an incredible atmosphere against a formidable opponent. We’re in good form and aiming to perform at our highest level. Bilbao are playing excellent football and are one of the top teams in Spain.”
When asked who would take the next penalty, Bellingham or Mbappé, Ancelotti responded, “Tomorrow, it will be up to them to decide—Bellingham or Mbappé. I don’t think there’s any room for debate on that. What Mbappé showed against Getafe was selflessness and responsibility, two qualities that are crucial for us.”
“Tchouaméni is in excellent shape; he’s trained well and has fully recovered, ready to start. We’ll see tomorrow where I choose to place him. The main point is that he’s back, and his return provides a significant boost to the team. He’s demonstrated his defensive value, whether as a center-back or a pivot. He’s an important player, especially with his contributions on set pieces, an area where we’ve struggled,” Ancelotti stated.
On Mbappé’s role with the team, Ancelotti commented, “For me, these actions make him even greater. We highly value acts of selflessness. When Mbappé uses his extraordinary talent for the team, it’s something that deserves recognition.”
Ancelotti continued: Ancelotti further explained: “The right winger has defensive tasks, much like the left. I don’t always rely on an attacking winger alone. Sometimes, I position players like Bellingham on the left or Díaz. Every player has unique characteristics, and we need to adapt to those.”
He further praised Asensio: “Asensio has proven to be a reliable defender—knowledgeable, calm, and motivated. He’s given a lot in the last four games, and if I need to bench him one day, I will think carefully about it.”
Speaking about the Copa Libertadores final and Botafogo, a potential Intercontinental Cup opponent, Ancelotti said: “I watched the match. The atmosphere was fantastic, especially the first minute. After that, the team’s commitment and effort were exceptional. If they qualify, they’ll need to play more matches to reach the final.”
He then shifted to Ceballos: “Ceballos is similar to Asensio; he came on and showcased his quality. He brings a different style to the midfield, more focused on control than energy. He moves the ball with confidence and character, showing great quality in his play.”
Reflecting on the team’s current state, Ancelotti said, “I’m feeling good. Despite the challenges we’ve faced, we’ve always fought. Nobody expects to win something in December, but you must stay competitive. With the return of Vinícius, Camavinga, and Alaba, we’ll be stronger.”
Discussing Bellingham’s recent performances, he added, “I think the improved team dynamic helped him return to scoring. We’ve been more precise and clear in possession, and some players, like Mbappé, have been opening up more spaces, which José has exploited.”
Regarding Garcia’s place in the lineup over Mendy, Ancelotti explained, “These are purely technical decisions, but I have great confidence in a player who has helped us win two Champions League titles. Fran has been performing well and has made the most of the opportunities I’ve given him.”
Finally, on Asensio’s growth: “Yes, Asensio’s level has surprised me, especially his maturity and calmness in handling game situations. He’s proven his worth and is now fully integrated into the team.”
