Barcelona beat Villarreal to extend its winning streak in La Liga

Date:

Barcelona beat Villarreal on Sunday evening with a controlled 2–0 victory at La Ceramica, continuing their impressive winning run and tightening their grip on the top spot in La Liga. Goals from Raphinha and Lamine Yamal ensured three valuable points for the Catalan side in a match marked by early dominance, refereeing controversy, and decisive moments in both halves.

Strong start sets the tone

Barcelona entered the encounter with confidence and immediately imposed their rhythm. Early attacking movements from Lamine Yamal and Fermín López signaled the visitors’ intent, forcing Villarreal into a reactive approach built on counter-attacks and high pressing through Buchanan and Ayoze Pérez.

Despite enjoying greater possession, Barcelona were not flawless in their build-up, allowing Villarreal to create moments of danger. The home side exploited passing errors to test goalkeeper Juan García, who remained alert during the opening exchanges.

Penalty sparks controversy and control

The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute when Raphinha burst into the penalty area and was fouled by Comesaña. The referee pointed to the spot amid heavy protests from Villarreal players, and the Brazilian winger calmly converted to give Barcelona the lead.

The goal confirmed Barcelona’s superiority but did not silence the hosts. Villarreal responded aggressively, coming close through Buchanan and a Pepe header that struck the crossbar before being ruled out for offside. Another Villarreal goal was also disallowed moments later, preserving Barcelona’s advantage.

Red card shifts the balance

A major turning point came in the 38th minute when Renato Veiga committed a reckless challenge on Lamine Yamal. Referee Alberola Rojas showed a straight red card, leaving Villarreal with ten men and further intensifying the tension inside the stadium.

Despite the numerical advantage, Barcelona were unable to extend their lead before halftime, heading into the break with a narrow but deserved 1–0 advantage.

Yamal’s brilliance seals the result

Barcelona emerged after the interval, determined to assert full control. Sustained pressure and quick ball circulation pinned Villarreal deep in their own half, although the hosts continued to fight with determination despite being a man down.

Juan García once again proved crucial, making several important saves to deny Villarreal any hope of an equalizer. Barcelona eventually found breathing space in the 63rd minute when Lamine Yamal capitalized on defensive confusion inside the box, firing a clever low finish between defenders’ legs.

Professional game management

Following the second goal, Hansi Flick introduced attacking options, including Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford, aiming to kill the match. Villarreal pushed forward desperately, but García’s reflexes ensured Barcelona’s clean sheet remained intact.

A late injury to Jules Koundé caused brief concern, yet Barcelona managed the closing stages with composure, slowing the tempo and maintaining possession until the final whistle.

With this result, Barcelona beat Villarreal to move onto 46 points at the summit of La Liga, four clear of Real Madrid, while Villarreal remain fourth on 35 points — a victory that further underlines Barcelona’s growing authority this season.
