Egypt beat Benin to Reach AFCON Quarter-Finals

Date:

Egypt beat Benin in a hard-fought Round of 16 clash at the Africa Cup of Nations, securing a dramatic 3-1 victory after extra time to book their place in the quarter-finals. The Pharaohs showed resilience, leadership, and attacking quality in a tense encounter held in Morocco, overcoming stubborn resistance from a disciplined Benin side.

First-Half Struggles and Missed Chances

The match began with Benin applying intense pressure on Egypt’s defensive line, particularly targeting the right flank behind Mohamed Hany. Physical duels dominated the opening stages, disrupting Egypt’s rhythm and limiting clear chances.

Despite Benin’s strong start, the first real opportunity fell to Egypt when Omar Marmoush broke through on goal. However, the Manchester City winger surprisingly failed to convert, setting the tone for a frustrating first half. Egypt struggled creatively, with misplaced passes and limited movement in the final third, while Mohamed Salah faced heavy marking whenever he drifted centrally.

Injury problems added to Egypt’s difficulties, as left-back Mohamed Hamdi was forced off late in the half and replaced by Ahmed Fatouh. The first half ended goalless, with Egypt enjoying more possession but lacking penetration.

Second-Half Breakthrough and Benin’s Response

Egypt returned with greater urgency after the break. Increased pressure eventually paid off in the 69th minute when Marwan Attia unleashed a powerful strike following a swift move initiated by Salah, giving the Pharaohs a deserved lead.

The goal pushed Benin forward, opening the game significantly. Substitute players added attacking momentum, and Egypt began to show defensive vulnerability. In the 83rd minute, Benin capitalized on a defensive mix-up, as Godlin Dossou pounced on a loose ball to level the score and force extra time.

Extra Time Decides the Contest

With fatigue setting in, Egypt demonstrated superior composure in extra time. In the 97th minute, Yasser Ibrahim rose highest from a set piece and headed the ball decisively into the net, restoring Egypt’s advantage.

Benin attempted to respond, but Egypt’s defensive organization improved, limiting space and slowing the tempo. As the match approached its conclusion, Mohamed Salah delivered the final blow in stoppage time, finishing calmly after a clever assist from Zizo to seal the victory.

Egypt Set Sights on the Quarter-Finals

As Egypt beat Benin, the Pharaohs confirmed their status as serious contenders under head coach Hossam Hassan. The win showcased depth, experience, and leadership, with Salah once again decisive at a critical moment.

Egypt now await the winner of Burkina Faso vs Ivory Coast, confident that their blend of discipline and attacking firepower can carry them even further in the tournament.
