Liverpool held by Burnley as points slip again

Liverpool held by Burnley was the story once again on Saturday afternoon, as the Reds were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the 22nd round of the Premier League. Despite dominating large spells of the match and creating numerous chances, Liverpool were unable to convert superiority into all three points.

Florian Wirtz gave the home side the lead late in the first half, but Burnley responded after the break through Marcus Edwards to silence the Anfield crowd. The result leaves Liverpool in fourth place with 36 points, while Burnley remain 19th with 14 points but earned a morale-boosting draw.

Missed penalty and first-half dominance

Liverpool started the match aggressively, pinning Burnley deep in their own half. Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a dangerous early cross that narrowly missed Hugo Ekitike, while Jeremie Frimpong and Ryan Gravenberch both tested the Burnley defense with long-range efforts.

The Reds were handed a golden opportunity in the 30th minute when Cody Gakpo won a penalty kick. However, Szoboszlai struck the crossbar from the spot, summing up Liverpool’s lack of efficiency in front of goal.

Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka then denied Gakpo with a powerful save, keeping his side alive under relentless pressure.

Wirtz breaks the deadlock

Liverpool finally found the breakthrough in the 42nd minute. A brilliant run from Ekitike created space in the Burnley defense before Curtis Jones picked out Florian Wirtz inside the box. The German midfielder fired a precise shot past Dubravka to give Liverpool a deserved lead heading into halftime.

Burnley fight back after the break

The second half saw a noticeable improvement from Burnley, who grew in confidence and began to threaten Liverpool on the counterattack. Their persistence paid off in the 65th minute when Florentino Luís threaded a smart pass to Marcus Edwards, who calmly finished to score his first Premier League goal of the season.

Liverpool responded with waves of attacks, and Hugo Ekitike thought he had restored the lead in the 77th minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after a VAR check.

Dubravka denies Liverpool late on

In the closing stages, Liverpool held by Burnley became increasingly evident as Dubravka produced a series of crucial saves to frustrate the Reds. Despite sustained pressure and late chances, Liverpool could not find a winning goal.

The final whistle confirmed another disappointing draw for Liverpool, raising fresh questions about their title ambitions as missed opportunities continue to pile up.
