Man City Cruise Past Sunderland in Dominant 3-0 Win
Manchester City continued their pursuit of Premier League leaders Arsenal, as Man City cruise past Sunderland with an impressive 3-0 win at the Etihad Stadium in the 15th round of the league. Goals from Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and Phil Foden sealed a comfortable victory that moved City to 31 points, now just two points behind Arsenal. In comparison, Sunderland remained in seventh place with 23 points.
City Begin to Take Control
The opening ten minutes were played cautiously, with neither team creating danger. Bernardo Silva produced City’s first real attempt in the 11th minute, but his long-range strike sailed above the Sunderland goal.
Sharqi attempted to break the deadlock himself moments later, cutting inside before sending a low effort wide of the far post.
Sunderland responded in the 17th minute with Lowe firing a dangerous low shot from the edge of the box, narrowly missing the target. City replied through Foden, whose long-range attempt lacked accuracy and drifted high.
Dias and Gvardiol Put City in Command
In the 31st minute, City struck their opener through Ruben Dias, who unleashed a fierce long-range shot that deflected off a defender and found the net.
Just four minutes later, Gvardiol doubled the lead with a towering header from Foden’s corner, giving the champions a confident 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Second Half: City Turn On the Style
City nearly added a third shortly after the break when Doku set up Aurelién inside the box, but his shot clipped the post. Doku remained a constant threat, dribbling past defenders before bending a curling effort that hit the upright and rebounded to Foden, whose follow-up was blocked.
A defensive mistake from Dias almost gifted Sunderland a lifeline, as Isidore intercepted the ball and fired a powerful shot that Donnarumma expertly stopped. Sunderland came even closer seconds later when Xhaka unleashed a rocket that smashed against the post.
Foden Completes the Rout
Cherki dazzled with his skill throughout the second half, producing a sublime lobbed pass to Haaland, whose volley was dramatically cleared off the line. Moments later, Cherki delivered a stylish rabona cross, which Phil Foden headed into the corner to make it 3-0.
Sharqi continued to create chances, feeding Renders with another brilliant pass, but the substitute wasted the opportunity with a weak finish.
Sunderland goalkeeper Rufus prevented an even heavier defeat, denying both Doku and Cherki late in the match. However, Sunderland’s evening worsened in stoppage time when Luke O’Nien was sent off following a VAR review for a reckless challenge.
