Neymar remains in Brazil plans under Ancelotti’s guidance
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar remains in Brazil plans, but emphasized that the star must reach peak physical condition before returning to the national team. The Seleção boss spoke ahead of Brazil’s friendly against Japan in Tokyo, as Neymar continues his efforts to revive his international career ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Ancelotti praised the 33-year-old forward’s exceptional talent but pointed out the importance of fitness:
“When Neymar is in good condition, he can play for any team in the world,” he said.
Neymar last appeared for Brazil in October 2023, when he suffered a severe knee ligament injury during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. Since then, his comeback efforts have been hindered by recurring physical setbacks.
Ancelotti’s focus on balance and teamwork
The Italian coach also discussed his philosophy, emphasizing balance and unity over flashy football.
“Brazil wants to play beautiful football,” Ancelotti said, “but true beauty lies in playing well both with and without the ball.”
Since taking charge, Ancelotti has led Brazil to three wins, one draw, and one defeat, with the team scoring nine goals and conceding just one — a penalty against Bolivia.
Neymar’s difficult return to Santos
After leaving Saudi club Al Hilal, Neymar returned to his boyhood team Santos in early 2025. However, his comeback has been slowed by persistent injuries.
He has played 21 matches, scoring six goals, but has yet to fully regain his rhythm or consistency.
The Brazilian star’s time at Al Hilal was equally frustrating, as he managed only seven appearances, scoring one goal and providing three assists before his knee injury in 2023 ended his season.
Neymar’s struggle to reclaim his international place
Neymar’s injuries have not only limited his club appearances but also distanced him from the national team setup. In his absence, younger talents such as Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo have risen to prominence.
Still, Ancelotti maintains that Neymar remains in Brazil plans, provided he can recover fully and return to his best. The 33-year-old remains Brazil’s second-highest scorer, behind the legendary Pelé, and hopes to reclaim his status as the team’s creative leader.
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Neymar’s journey back to the Seleção will depend on his ability to stay fit, rediscover his form, and reignite the passion that once made him one of the most electrifying players in football.
